A Poem About Water

Water , water ,
Everywhere ,
But have you wondered ,
Where it's from ?

We have taps ,
We have pipes ,
But all they do ,
Is supply our water .

It's so essential ,
For us to live ,
Yet , we go on ,
Not knowing its origins .

So listen close ,
And listen well ,
I will tell you ,
And you must remember ,
For our water
comes from RIVERS !

# 97% of water for our consumption comes from RIVERS

Community Activities in River Monitoring Programme

One of the key factors that have led to the detrimental state of our rivers is the lack of community participation in river management .

There are many ways we can do to protect our rivers .

  • Lake monitoring activities
  • Drain stencil
  • Wetland cell construction
  • Fish conservation
  • Stream habitat creation
  • Biological monitoring
  • Water quality monitoring
  • Rubbish collection and rubbish trap maintenance
  • Community water quality monitoring training
  • River hydrology study

Issues and effects of river pollution

Solid Waste
  • Rubbish produced by residents, restaurants and other commercial shops and factories.
Wastewater pollution
  • From residential drains, industrial effluent, agricultural farms, restaurants and workshops.
Channelisation
  • Straightening of rivers into concrete channels. Increases risk of floods.
Encroachment into river reserve land
  • Houses, factories and buildings built directly next to rivers. Reduces area of natural land and riparian vegetation around the river. Increases risk of flood.
[KEY MESSAGES]
Without clean river, we cannot have clean drinking water.
Drains are meant for rainwater ONLY.

The drains we have in our homes and along the roads all lead
directly to rivers/ lakes without any treatment.
